Gladys                     Gladys’ Story

                                                                                                                Gladys is one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever had
                                                                                                                the pleasure of having, as well as being the most
                                                                                                                like another child…perhaps a sassy teenager!
                                                                                                                She knows far too many words, can open doors
                                                                                                                with a variety of handles, and brings us her bowl
                                                                                                                when she is hungry or thirsty. In fact, if we don’t
                                                                                                                fill her food bowl quickly enough, she turns it
                                                                                                                over in protest—it’s stainless steel, so it makes
                                                                                                                quite a bit of noise! (We get it—you’re hungry!)
                                                                                                                Gladys also wants our undivided attention;
                                                                                                                she strongly prefers that we do NOT utilize any
                                                                                                                personal technology devices and lets us know
                                                                                                                using the subtle approach of knocking them
                                                                                                                out of our hands. The same goes for the TV
                                                                                                                remote — only with that, she’ll simply take it
                                                                                                                into another room.
                                                                                                                The way Gladys came to us was something of
                                                                                                                an accident, or at least wasn’t planned. The
                                                                                                                Trenton Animal Shelter was dealing with a lot
                                                                                                                of political issues and were locking rescues out.
                                                                                                                We went to the shelter to support those rescues.
                                                                                                                While there, I was handed a leash and told to
                                                                                                                please hold her during the press conference. I
                                                                                                                was happy to oblige. Once the press conference
                                                                                                                ended, and the day went on, Gladys had
                                                                                                                nowhere to go. She’s been with us ever since.
                                                                                                                We’re convinced that Gladys was sent for our
                                                                                                                family after we tragically lost our boy GusGus.
                                                                                                                Their mannerisms are similar, and she uses
                                                                                                                her paws like hands, just as he did! The timing
                                                                                                                was also perfect, as we were just starting to
                                                                                                                experience empty nest syndrome. Then this
                                                                                                                sweetheart came along and filled our lives with
                                                                                                                love, laughter, and affection. From that day
                                                                                                                forward, she’s embodied unconditional love,
                                                                                                                and I can’t imagine a life without it.
